The story of Ruth is a beautiful little break from the stormy story of Israel, nestled between the books of Judges and 1 Samuel in our English Bibles.  It records the story of king David's ancestry, centering on his great-grandmother, Ruth.  Against all expectations, Ruth is a Moabite, not an Israelite at all.  Where other kingly origin stories from the ancient world overplay their subjects' majestic ancestry or supernatural events surrounding their births, the story of Ruth is one of God's intervention and providence in the middle of the most ordinary circumstances.  Through the tragic losses of Naomi and Ruth and the gracious favor of Boaz, God worked redemption not only for Israel, but ultimately for the whole world.
